In blustery conditions both defences excelled and Kilkenny playing with the breeze could only muster a six point lead by the break. It looked good for Cork but it was Kilkenny who scored a goal shortly after the break which seemed to unsettle the Rebels. 

Cork fought back strongly and cut the deficit to produce a nail-biting finish. It seemed it would end up Corks day but courageous Kilkenny clung to a two point advantage as Cork bombarded their goal area.
