Nestled in the heart of the north Antrim village of Loughguile where hurling is the life blood of the community, Scullion Hurls is a family run business with 30 years experience in the production of hand finished hurleys. Originally begun as a hobby by Joe Scullion in the late seventies, joe would fasion hurls for himself and the other players on the local team Loughguile Shamrocks from ash trees stumped by himself then hand made to the individuals requirements.
Over the years more and more people would travel to the small workshop to purchase hurls from Joe and following the success of the Loughguile Shamrocks in winning the All Ireland club final of 1983 Joe began producing hurls on a full time basis. In 1988 a purpose built workshop was errected on the same site and machinery was introduced to enable larger qualtities of hurls to be made while still allowing for the hand finishing of each piece to the customers requirements.
Success of the Senior County team in reaching the 1989 All Ireland Final saw Scullion Hurls on the big stage with many of the county players of the time such as Olcan (Clute) Mc Fetridge, Aiden (Beaver) Mc Carry and Domnic (Woody) Mc Kinley to name but a few favouring a Scullion Hurl. Further clubs throughout Ulster began to pick up on the quality of the Scullion brand and throughout the ninties the business continued to produce hurls until Joe decided to retire from the business.
He continued to make hurls as a hobby but it wasn't until 2003 when his son Micheal took the reigns that full production began again. Micheal had learned the trade by working in the workshop throughout his teens and with a shared passion for craft and quality of workmanship it wasn't long before people took notice of the refreshed look Scullion Hurl. With the emphasis still on quality, only the best root ash is selected then seasoned before being machined and hand finished by Micheal Scullion in the same Loughguile workshop. Only the best hurls will receive the now famous Scullion brand before being sent to Clubs and Individuals throughout Ireland and the world.
